This site is centered around a blog, and a growing body of reference works, with these goals in mind.
The actions and rhetoric from both major partys have basically ceased to discuss the nature of government, merely how much they're going to expand it, and in which directions. Both parties have become "statist" in nature. Both sides, for different reasons continue to add programs we cannot afford, and subtract rights they have no authority to take.
What was meant to be a subserviant government intrudes where it has no authority. Divines jobs for itself never intended, usurps rights it was specifically prohibited from touching and confiscates from your grandchildren to pay for it. I doubt there are five politicians, "serving" in government who would put "we the people" over their political party.
This was not the plan!
To the coporate world, Laissez-faire means "say nothing, even when we work to the nation's detriment." This is not to say that government's job is to "control" these entities, rather that a nation's people, sufficiently educated on the essential things a nation must posess to remain a free society, and what effect changes will bring, would neither allow or invest in their own demise. Here, "we must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."
This nation was once the largest lender nation in the world. We're now drowning in a sea of debt. We now pay more in taxes than we do for our food, clothing, and shelter combined. Yet government continually spends more, special interests, noble or not, continually cry "Not enough!", and Americans continually bring home less and less to pay for it all. If we have failed in all of this, it is that they've allowed ourselves to go from a false belief our interests were represented to the belief we've neither authority nor means to change it.
In 1950 "Tax Freedom Day" was April 3rd. Now it's May 10th. In 1950 American familys paid roughly 25% of their income to government. Today we pay nearly 40%. Feudal serfs typically only worked for their lords one day in five! (20%)
$8 Trillion in debt:
We borrow money from foreign sources at a rate of $1.5
Billion a day to merely pay the interest on what we
owe. Not satisfied, our current "compassionate conservative"
administration has obligated this nation to $1.5
Trillion in new spending over the
next ten years with no taxes to cover it! How is
this either conservative or compassionate? Secty Rumsfeld's own estimate
is for our troops to be in Iraq for the next 12 years. At the current
rate of spending this means nearly $1.3
Trillion in additional spending over the same period.
$2.8 Trillion in new
debt over the next ten years, and that's before the Democrats get
their 2 cents worth (I wish!) in.
The means to turn this around has existed for over 200 years. It is not government's place to decide our direction, nor the road we travel.
